It seems appropriate that the mini-blanket in the upper right of this picture was the first real thing I knitted while my son was in the hospital and I was just learning to knit. I still love it. I'm almost finished putting the fringe on it - which was the thing it really needed but it took me almost two years to figure out.
This kid-themed mini-quilt top is the second one I did. The yellow material is from a t-shirt and was difficult to work with but not as hard as the materials in the first quilt top, which I'll talk about more below. I was going to try to make a draw-string bag to put a birthday gift in but I didn't have everything I needed to finish it in time. So now I'm going to turn it into a shoulder bag for my daughter. She's excited.
On the left we have my first ever quilt top. The polka dot fabrics are stretchy and shiny. The plain red is satiny. The batik is one that i did myself on the purple satin. Sewing all those different types of stretchy, shiny, stiff fabrics together was challenging and, as you can see, my corners don't meet up or anything, but I'm really happy with it. The piece to the right of it is the batik that I'll use for the backing. I'll probably need to add some fabric to the edges to make it big enough.
The triangle pattern on the corner of the couch is my attempt at improve patchwork before I watched a tutorial that showed some handy tips on putting random shapes together. I need to pull some seems out and fix it but I think I'll keep going. I really like the fabric combinations and the radial shape. I just found an old photo-based print that I did on fabric back in college with the same colors and I'm going to use it for the backing. It's so exciting to use all these fabrics that I've been saving for such a long time - over ten years for most of them. It feels like this was really meant to be.
More thoughts on the origins of fabric in another post. I should really go do the laundry that I'm procrastinating on by starting this new blog.
